Kiran Klaus Patel is the Principal Investigator of InechO, an ERC Advanced Grant project that took up its work in late 2023. Moreover he holds the Chair of Modern History at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) and is Director of Project House Europe.
Before joining LMU, he held chairs at Maastricht University in the Netherlands (2011-2019) and the European University Institute in Florence, Italy (2007-2011), and an assistant professorship at Humboldt University in Berlin (2002-2007). He has been (inter alia) a visiting fellow/professor at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Science Sociales in Paris, the Free University of Berlin, Freiburg University, Harvard University, the London School of Economics, Sciences Po in Paris and the University of Oxford. His teaching and research focuses on issues of European and US American history. Comparative, transnational, and global approaches feature prominently in his work.
As Principal Investigator of InechO, he has the overall project responsibility. He is in charge of InechO's joint activities, next to mentoring the post-docs and supervising the PhD candidates. Moreover, he will produce a major synthesis on the legacy of European IGOs, demonstrating that they do not just disappear. Cooperating closely with the other team members, it will draw on the other sub-projects' insights, but also integrate additional IOs, such as the the Brussels-based Institut Colonial International. This IGO served as an inter-imperial hub seeking to “improve” colonial rule. Its long history – and its interconnections with and afterlife in organizations such as the ILO and UNESCO – will add to InechO’s findings.
